PepsiCo Coil and Fin Coating

HVAC refurbishment helped improve condenser efficiency by 12.8 percent with a payback of three years.

Value Delivered

ECM provided HVAC rejuvenation services focused on improving condenser coil and fin at PepsiCo’s Houston bottling plant. The process helped restore existing equipment to near its original operating efficiency, while also protecting it against future corrosion.

Our HVAC armor coil coating was applied to all coil cabinet surfaces to help restore deteriorated aluminum. Its UV resistant and hydrophobic properties will also help prevent further corrosion and minimize dust and mold build up for easier cleaning.

Performance measurements taken after refurbishment showed a 12.8-percent increase in the condenser coefficient of performance. The success of this project led to a nationwide rollout of these services.

Client Objectives

Houston's atmosphere is one of the most corrosive environments to coils and fins of rooftop HVAC units. PepsiCo’s sustainability group wanted to combat these conditions, extend the useful life of its HVAC systems, and optimize performance.

Solutions

ECM implemented a seven-step process for refurbishing the existing HVAC equipment. It addressed fin and coil deterioration, oil build-up, variations in system charge, and dryer filter blockages.

Step 1: Pre-inspection and Recommendations

  • Review and document equipment condition to identify issues prior to service

Steps 2 and 3: Coil/Fin Service and Deep Clean

  • Remove housings and casings
  • Clean and straighten fins
  • Deep clean coils from both sides

Steps 4 and 5: Equipment Prep and Coating

  • Mask off areas that do not need coating
  • Apply corrosion inhibitor
  • Spray coating on coils from inside and outside

Steps 6 and 7: Refrigerant System Optimization

  • Recondition internal surfaces, filters, and fluids
  • Replace dryer filters
  • Level the charge to factory specifications
