Houston Airport System

14,000 lighting retrofits will help this airport system generate thousands of dollars in energy savings.

Airport building in Houston

Value Delivered

We provided comprehensive, turnkey lighting retrofits at the William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

The completed retrofits help generate annual savings of 1,660 kilowatts or $725,989, which is projected to result in a simple payback of 5.4 years. Additionally, we also helped the client secure rebates worth $425,303.

Client Objectives

The project was part of a guaranteed energy savings performance contract (GESPC) that the airport developed with Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station and CenterPoint Energy.

Solutions

At HOU, the project targeted a three-story terminal, concourse, and connecting garage complex, while at IAH it focused on their largest terminal and three parking garages. We worked on both airside and landside areas, including security, baggage, tunnels, operations, passenger commons, offices, warehouses, and more.

Our scope of work covered:

  • 14,000 retrofits
  • 9,000 new fixtures
  • 1,500 control systems
  • 20,000 lamps

As an additional challenge, the retrofit was completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, which in combination with the airport setting, required our team to meet stringent safety and security requirements.

Client Background

Houston Airport System operates three major airports in the Houston metro, which together serve tens of millions of passengers annually.
