Value Delivered
Working with our ESCO client, we provided both laboratory and kitchen solutions for this campus project. Our team replaced thirteen fume hoods and added exhaust system redundancy without increasing the capital budget.
This retrofit helped increase lab safety, reduce energy and maintenance costs, and improve airflow reliability throughout the facilities. The project delivered almost $85,000 per year in energy savings, with a 4.6-year simple payback, and addressed some major deferred maintenance concerns.
Client Objectives
The university had several issues related to equipment age and deferred maintenance with no capital budget for the work. Laboratory fume hoods needed to be replaced, the discharge and make-up air vents needed an overhaul, and the kitchen hoods were operational, but inefficient.
Solutions
ECM performed the following services:
- Replaced 13 fume hood systems with cutting-edge TEL equipment, featuring:
- Automatic sash controls
- Dampers with actuators
- Exhaust pressure controls
- Make-up air pressure controls
- Supply damper variable air volume boxes
- Summations units
- Converted laboratory exhaust discharge to stainless steel stacks
- Redesigned fan system to create redundancy for maintenance purposes
- Added TEL hood controllers to kitchen exhaust systems to vary the amount of exhaust based on demand from the kitchen equipment
